Q90 FM and HopeNet 360 take seriously our responsibility to our listeners, to provide the true Word of God and the hope of Jesus through our music and programs. While we value the work of Life Promotions, proudly partnering with them for many years in our shared mission to reach youth for Christ, we became concerned with the beliefs and teachings of one of the main speakers at Lifest 2010, Jim Wallis. After researching extensively the words and published positions of Jim Wallis and his organization, Sojourners Magazine, and seeking fervently the guidance of the Holy Spirit in prayer, we believe the social justice message and agenda they promote is a seed of secular humanism, seeking an unholy alliance between the Church and Government.
Just as was preached at Leap of Faith Lambeau 3 years ago, humanism is the new “unholy yeast” that has infected the Body of Christ. Humanism says, “It’s up to us to save us, our planet, the poor”, instead of “It’s up to God and His power through us”. Humanism says “man is inherently good—it’s only the social constructs, such as too-limited a government or our free-enterprise, capitalist economy that oppress man, making him do evil”, instead of “man is inherently sinful, responsible for his own choice to sin, and in need of a Savior.” (Romans 1:25). The humanistic social justice message in many of Sojourners’ issue FAQs points to government as the solution, instead of our Lord Jesus Christ.
We agree with what is commanded through Paul in 1 Timothy 5, that it is our responsibility to take care of "widows and orphans" and any who are unable to care for themselves. And we heed Jesus' warning to care for “the least of these” in Matthew 25:35-46. We recognize that individually and as the Body of Christ we are not doing all we could as Jesus taught us to. But we do not believe the solution is the church partnering with the government in this endeavor. Feeding the poor with no ability to share the gospel message is at best an incomplete solution. And we fear this is what will happen as the government controls the purse strings. Doing so might indeed help them in this life, at least while the food and water lasts, but what about their eternal souls? While we are commanded by Jesus to help the poor, Jesus said our greatest calling is in Matthew 28:19: Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Coming under federal control may make this impossible without legal and financial persecution. The movement in our nation toward the forced redistribution of wealth through taxation ensures this—when the government controls where the money goes, freedom to express the gospel of Jesus Christ will eventually be eliminated legally, as it has with every Church and State merger since 371 AD. The state becomes god. We believe in the biblical teaching of voluntary redistribution of wealth through the charitable giving of God’s people.
As other ministry leaders had before us, we brought our concerns to Bob Lenz directly. What followed was two weeks of discussions on possible compromises from both sides done in good faith by Life Promotions and Q90 FM, including our offer of having Mr. Wallis withdraw from Lifest this year and come up to our area at our expense, for the purpose of meeting with Christian Pastors and leaders to have a civil dialogue about differences, giving the community time to prayerfully consider where we agree and disagree as Christians. Our General Manager spoke with Jim Wallis personally twice making this offer to him and Life Promotions. This compromise was rejected. Life Promotions decided to hold to their original decision to bring Jim Wallis to Lifest. Because of this and the responsibility we feel for our listeners, our Board of Directors has decided we cannot endorse, by our official sponsorship and presence, the appearance of Jim Wallis at Lifest 2010, and thus Q90 FM and HopeNet 360 will not be attending this year. The issue of humanism and the roles of the church and government in social justice are crucial issues facing the Body of Christ. We encourage all parents to become informed of both sides of the argument, seek God’s wisdom in His Word and talk to your children about this issue.
We are not calling for a boycott of Lifest. We do not view Jim Wallis as an enemy nor do we think of Life Promotions as the enemy or a bad organization. We believe Life Promotions is doing great things for the Kingdom of God . We just have a fundamental disagreement on the wisdom of bringing Mr. Wallis to Lifest. We realize many great things occur at Lifest through the music and many of the speakers. In these increasingly challenging times with growing threats to God’s people, we ask every Christian to read the Bible with great discernment, look at the views of Sojourners and the opposing views, and prayerfully seek God’s wisdom and guidance. If you do attend Lifest this year, our prayer is that you will be blessed and that God will bless Lifest and our friends at Life Promotions.
If you have any questions, please email our General Manager, Mike LeMay at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Thank you and God bless.

- Word on the Way
- Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about the Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of instruction about washings and laying on of hands, and the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment.
