Sharing your faith with Jehovah’s Witnesses
Beliefs: Satan is the originator of the idea of the Trinity. The Father is the supreme God whose real name is Jehovah. Jesus is a created being known originally as Michael the Archangel; he is “a god,” not Jehovah. Jesus only rose spiritually, not bodily, from the dead. The Holy Spirit is the impersonal active force of God. Only the anointed class (or little flock) numbering 144,000 will go to heaven, while faithful “other sheep” will live eternally on a paradise earth; the lost will cease to exist (annihilationism). Publishes the Watchtower and Awake! magazines, the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures (their own version of the Bible), as well as numerous books. Originally called International Bible Students, followers today are called Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Sharing the Gospel
Jehovah’s Witnesses are very passionate and have been indoctrinated heavily into their false belief system. Their belief that Jesus was “a god” can best be questioned with John 1:1-2 (“in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God), and by pointing out in Revelation 21:6, where Jesus says “It is done. I am the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End.”
Do not be belligerent and think your arguments will “convert” them—simply give them the scriptures as something to think about and then pray for God to open their eyes. JWs also believe in salvation by works, so point out the scriptures about salvation through faith and trust in Jesus alone, and how the Old Testament pointed to the futility of attaining salvation through the perfect works of man.
Offer to pray with them to Jehovah God about personal things happening in their lives. Your personal testimony of how Jesus has changed your life will not mean anything to them since they believe God is not personal and intimately involved in details of our lives. If they ask questions answer them with love and truth—their questions might indicate the Holy Spirit is beginning to work on them. Do ask them to help you understand how to reconcile their beliefs with the Bible. They are trained to teach, not listen. Your questions will force them to think.
If you are versed with their teachings, do challenge their faith in The Watchtower by pointing out discrepancies in their own literature. JWs are not allowed to read anything anti-JW so use their own literature and discrepancies against their belief system.
